Through the leadership of Senator John A. Girgenti, D-35th District, the Boys & Girls Club of Hawthorne has been awarded a State Grant in the amount of $150,000 which will be used toward the expansion of
Club facilities to include aTeen Center and two multi-purpose classrooms.
“We are extremely grateful to Senator Girgenti for securing this grant award for the Club” says Tom
Demko, executive director. “We are committed to our teen population and are excited that we will building
a program space dedicated to this age group”
Demko says that through a recent strategic planning process which involved Club staff, board members, community leaders and Club volunteers that one of the strongest visions to emerge was the need for the
Club to reach out and serve a greater number of teens and to provide them with their own space. The Club brought this vision to Senator Girgenti who has been a strong supporter of Boys & Girls Clubs.
Demko says that the Club is in the early planning stages and is still determining total cost factors of the project, but estimates work to begin this fall or in the spring of 2007. He says that the Club is very grateful
to the Hawthorne Lions organization who have agreed to relocate their loan closet currently adjacent to the Club, so that space can be utilized in the Clubs expansion plans.
The Boys & Girls Club of Hawthorne serves over 1,500 youth annually from pre-school age to teens and
has been serving the youth of Hawthorne since 1947. The Clubs building on Maitland Avenue was constructed and opened in 1972 and a second story addition was added in 2000 to expand the Clubs child care services. Demko says that this project is important and that further engaging middle and high
school age youth is an organizational priority “The Club makes a difference in the lives of children of all ages. This project is a great way to celebrate our up-coming 60th Anniversary and our continued commitment to meeting the needs of youth and community”
